Tax Manager, Public Accounting Firm

Our customer is one of the largest public accounting firms in the Niagara / Hamilton / Halton region with offices spanning from Burlington to Welland. The firm has grown to include 26 Partners, 20 Managers and a cast of supporting staff. They have the experience to handle any situation from complex mergers and acquisitions to assisting new entrepreneurs through the many facets of starting a small business. All of the firm’s services are performed while remaining personally involved with the clients and the communities where they work and live.

Living in the beautiful Niagara Region, working out of the firm’s St. Catharines office under the general supervision of the Tax Partner and/or Senior Tax Manager, the Tax Manager will work on various personal and corporate tax planning mandates. The Tax Manager will be an internal resource for all professionals who need tax support on their client files or on specific questions from their clients. He/she is responsible for overseeing the performance and training of subordinate professional staff members, including assuming the role of Development Advisor, if deemed appropriate.

The salary range for this Tax Manager position is $80,000 to $100,000 (some upward flexibility for quality applicants with greater needs) plus a broad/competitive benefits package, summer hours, payment of annual CPA membership fees and a comprehensive employee benefits package.

Position Responsibilities:
Upon arrival, meet with the Partners, the Sr. Managers and the staff and establish, and then actively maintain, constructive business relationships with them. Learn about the firm and the current processes and software solutions (Caseware Taxprep) and start to become familiar with the client files assigned by the Sr. Tax Manager and/or Tax Partner.
Within 30 days, direct and control tax engagements, including ensuring:
  • Engagements are planned, scheduled, staffed and carried out according to the firms standards and work philosophy.
  • The quality and quantity of work meets all Firm and professional standards.
  • Budgets are met and engagements are completed on a timely basis.
  • Engagements are fully completed, with all issues resolved.
  • Presentation of tax plans, including identification and discussion of issues with the clients.

Within 60 days,start to provide technical expertise, as needed, to staff in the completion of the work.
Review tax returns and working paper documentation, and prepare opinions and position papers.
Research, interpret the tax legislation, developing approaches and positions and then prepare opinions and position papers.
Within 90 days, begin to actively identify and recommend detailed and creative solutions to moderate tax issues.  Present those to the Sr. Tax Manager and/or Tax Partner for consideration, comment and approval.
Prepare tax plans and delegate and supervise staff work where appropriate.
Prepare client correspondence; including reports, discussion of technical issues and recommendations.
Bring to the attention of the Sr. Tax Manager or the Tax Partner, any significant issues or findings, along with detailed recommendations for their resolution.  As discuss with the Assurance Partner, if required.
Proactively manage billings on tax engagements.
Within 120 days, start to act in the capacity of Development Advisor to specific tax staff – providing support and development, if deemed appropriate by the Partner In Charge.
Other tasks and projects required of a CPA tax professional consistently looking to add value and demonstrate what they and the firm can do can do help client’s to consistently improve efficiency and grow profitably.
